How much radioactive substances were dispersed during the accident?

  • Accident

Answer

In regards to the amount of radioactive substances that were discharged into the atmosphere during March 2011 as a result of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS Accident, it is estimated that approximately 500PBq of noble gasses, approximately 500PBq of Iodine-131, approximately 10PBq of Cesium-134 and approximately 10PBq of Cesium-137 was discharged into the atmosphere.
Furthermore, the INES level for determining the scale of nuclear accidents was determined to be Level 7 for the Fukushima Daiichi NPS Accident, which is the same level as the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident. The Three Mile Island was a Level 5.
*P(Peta) is 10 to the 15th power, or in other words, 1,000 trillion. Bq (Becquerel) is a unit of radioactivity corresponding to one disintegration per second.
