Things you should know more about decommissioning
Question

What was the cause of the accident?

  • Accident

Answer

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station was struck by a tsunami approximately 50 minutes after the earthquake. Almost the entire site where the reactors are located was flooded by the tsunami. Buildings, etc. were flooded thereby rendering power equipment inoperable and causing a loss of important safety functions, such as reactor cooling water injection and status monitoring, etc. It became impossible to cool the scrammed cores of Units 1~3, which were in operation at the time of the earthquake, thereby resulting in a core melt accident.
