Answer

Fuel that has been used in a nuclear reactor to generate electricity is referred to as “spent fuel.” Spent fuel must be periodically replaced in conjunction with reactor operation so the reactors are shutdown during regular outage and the spent fuel is replaced with new fuel. After use, the spent fuel is temporarily cooled in a fuel pool inside the reactor building after which is removed from the building.
