Things you should know more about decommissioning
Question

What is "decommissioning work"?

  • Decommissioning work

Answer

Decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station consists of dismantling reactor facilities. In preparation for this, nuclear fuel stored in the spent fuel pools has to first be removed, and then the fuel inside the reactors that melted (fuel debris) needs to be removed. In order to continually reduce risks associated with radioactive substances generated during the accident, we are engaged in four primary tasks (fuel removal, fuel debris retrieval, contaminated water measures, reactor facility dismantling), which we expect will take 30 to 40 years.
