Things you should know more about decommissioning
Question

What happened in the accident?

  • Accident

Answer

At the time of the accident, Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Units 1~3 were online, and Units 4~6 were undergoing periodic inspection. The tsunami rendered the cooling systems for Units 1~3 inoperable, and the reactors could not be cooled thereby allowing the fuel to melt and fall. Hydrogen generated during this process accumulated at the top of the reactor buildings of Units 1 and 3 from which it flowed through pipes around to Unit 4 eventually leading to hydrogen explosions at all three reactor buildings and the scattering of a large amount of radioactive substances.
