Role of the TEPCO Group in society

The TEPCO Group hopes to continue contributing towards the realization of an enriched, sustainable society that is both convenient and easy to live in, while also remaining in harmony with nature, by providing the electrical power needed for modern day life, together with an optimal energy service lineup.

TEPCO provides an amount of power equivalent to that required for the whole of Italy.

Japan currently ranks as the 5th largest energy consumer in the world. The net system energy demand covered by TEPCO in providing the power needed to run the Tokyo Metropolitan Area - the heart of Japan's economy - accounts for around one-third of the total power consumption rate for Japan. This output reached 289 billion kWh in FY 2008. This figure is around the same power consumption rate for the whole of Italy.

Maintaining world-class power stability.

In assuming the mantle to provide electricity to the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, TEPCO works tirelessly to continually provide a stable, high-quality power supply. The average annual power failure time per household measures just three minutes. TEPCO's highly reliable facilities and advanced technical capabilities combine to deliver world-class power stability in terms of both annual power failure counts and blackout times.

Initiatives implemented to achieve a low carbon society.

TEPCO has set a voluntary target to reduce average CO2 emission levels for the five year period from FY 2008 to FY 2012 by 20% compared to FY 1990. CO2 emissions following adjustments implemented in FY 2008 were reduced to 0.332kg-CO2/kWh following a range of initiatives introduced to meet this target, namely the safe and stable operation of nuclear power plants (which do not emit CO2 during power generation), the efficient operation of thermal power, and the implementation of carbon credits through the application of the Kyoto mechanisms, among other measures.

A world-leading thermal efficiency rate of 61%.

TEPCO has taken great strides in improving thermal power generation efficiency, introducing the 1,500°C class combined cycle generator (MACC power generation), which runs at a world-leading thermal efficiency rate of 59%, at the Kawasaki Thermal Power Plant in June 2007 and the Futtsu Thermal Power Station in July 2008. Further, in January 2016 TEPCO then went on to introduce the 1,600°C class combined cycle generator (MACC II power generation), which runs at a thermal efficiency rate of 61%, at the Kawasaki Thermal Power Plant.

Efforts to further reduce CO2 emissions with the widespread use of EcoCute.

TEPCO promotes the widespread adoption of the highly-efficient EcoCute, which contributes greatly to reducing CO2 emissions. Approximately 470,000 EcoCute units are already in use in TEPCO service areas, which contributes to a reduction of 300,000 t in CO2 emissions annually. This is the equivalent of forest conservation efforts over an area three times' the size of Tokyo's 23 wards*.
