Preliminary Transmission Network Construction Survey Project in Southern Zambia

Project overview

In Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, which is situated in the southern part of the African continent, power outages resulting from insufficient power occur for eight hours every day. Approximately 90% of Zambia's power comes from hydroelectric power, and building a new transmission line connecting these power stations to Lusaka is expected to resolve the grave power deficiencies.
As part of a joint venture with Tokyo Electric Power Services Co., Ltd. and Nippon Koei Co., Ltd., TEPCO performed preliminary surveys for the Transmission Network Construction Project in Southern Zambia, a candidate for infrastructure development assistance for developing countries to be provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
By establishing new transmission lines and building new, and expanding upon existing, substations in southern Zambia in relation to this, this project is set to provide a stable supply of electricity to the region, help revitalize the country's economy, and contribute to international power interchanges in the south of Africa.

Further support provided in developing a master plan for rural electrification in Zambia

TEPCO also provided support from May 2006 to January 2008 in developing a master plan for efficient rural electrification based on requests received from Zambia's Ministry of Energy and Water Development via JICA.
TEPCO surveyed unelectrified towns nationwide to approximate the potential power demand and the costs required for electrification. This rural electrification project was selected as a priority measure for implementation by 2030, and studies into the procurement of funding were also performed.
