Status of the Introduction of Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is energy that has a smaller impact on the environment, such as solar, wind and hydro power. TEPCO has been introducing power generation facilities that use renewable energy and has met the quota under the Act on Special Measures Concerning New Energy Use by operators of electric utilities (Renewable Portfolio Standard [RPS] Act).*
This page outlines our renewable energy efforts starting with the Ukishima Solar Power Station (mega-solar power station) that started operation in Aug. 2011.

* RPS Act: This act requires retail electric utilities to ensure that a specified percentage of electricity they sell is produced from renewable energy sources as defined by law.

Solar Power Generation ("Mega-Solar")

Our first commercial solar power station (mega-solar power station) came into operation in Ukishima, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, in Aug. 2011, followed by Ohgishima solar power station in Dec. 2011 in Ohgishima, Kawasaki City. TEPCO brought another mega-solar power station into operation in Komekurayama, Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture in Jan. 2012. Together these three power stations provide a maximum output of 30,000 kW.

Wind Power Generation

Recent technical advancement in wind power generation has made larger equipment available at lower cost, which has enabled cost-effective power generation with preferable conditions such as strong wind and similar factors.
In Aug. 2015, TEPCO started operation of our first wind farm in Higashi-Izu-cho and Kawazu-cho in Kamo-gun, a county in Shizuoka Prefecture.
TEPCO is carrying out experimental studies and similar measures in collaboration with research organizations and other companies with the goal of utilizing large-scale wind power generation.

Geothermal Power Generation

Japan is said to be third in the world in geothermal power generation resources, with these used to generate approximately 23 GW. TEPCO is developing and studying new geothermal power stations in various areas of Japan with the objective of constructing such stations in various areas in the future.
The Hachijojima Geothermal Power Station is TEPCO's first geothermal power station built in Hachijojima. This power station was designed with emphasis on the conservation of the island's natural environment and harmonization with the local community, and it uses geothermal energy while giving utmost consideration to the surrounding environment.
