Power Supply-Demand Conditions on March 22 and Request for Cooperation in Saving Electricity

March 21, 2022

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc.
TEPCO Power Grid, Inc.

On March 22, power supply-demand conditions for the East Japan area will be extremely tight due to unseasonably cold temperatures, which we predict will cause an increase in power demand, coupled with a decrease in solar power output caused by bad weather, not to mention the continued shutdown of some power stations in East Japan in the wake of the strong earthquake that occurred off the coast of Fukushima on March 16 and further unplanned power outages.

To ensure that we can continue to provide a stable source of electricity to our customers, TEPCO is coordinating with utility companies throughout Japan, such as Tohoku Electric Power Company, Inc., to implement various supply-demand countermeasures*1. Through these efforts, we are striving to maintain a stable supply of power, but we predict that power supply-demand conditions tomorrow shall be extremely tight. We are continuing to closely examine the situation, but we predict that we may not be able to supply enough power to meet expected demand.

We therefore ask for the cooperation of our customers in TEPCO’s service area*2 to save energy from the morning of the 22nd by turning off unnecessary lighting and setting the temperature of heaters to 20°C at homes and offices.

The latest electricity supply-demand forecasts including energy conservation can be found on TEPCO Power Grid, Inc.’s website under the “Electricity Forecast” section as well as on TEPCO’s twitter account.
