Submission of the “Application Documents for Approval to Amend the Implementation Plan for Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Specified Nuclear Facility” Regarding the Handling of ALPS Treated Water

Considering the Basic Policy on handling of ALPS treated water at the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings’ Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station decided by the Japanese government in April 2021, TEPCO has been reviewing the details of the design and operation of facilities for securing safety regarding the handling of ALPS treated water at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, listening to opinions of the people in the region and parties concerned.

Today, we submitted the “Application Documents for Approval to Amend the Implementation Plan for Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Specified Nuclear Facility” for the basic design of ALPS treated water dilution/discharge facility and related facilities to the Nuclear Regulation Authority. We will respond sincerely to the review by the Nuclear Regulation Authority.

Ahead of the submission of the application, we submitted a “Request for Prior Consent※1” to Fukushima Prefecture, Okuma Town and Futaba Town based on the Agreement to Ensure Safety in Surrounding Areas Related the Decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station※2.

We will continue to thoroughly implement measures related to the handling of ALPS treated water based on the Japanese government’s basic policy while continuing to carefully listen to the opinions from parties concerned so as to further ensure safety.

*1  Prior consent needs to be obtained from Fukushima Prefecture, Futaba Town and Okuma Town based on the Agreement to Ensure Safety in Decommissioning when building or expanding facilities in line with amending the Implementation Plan for Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Specified Nuclear Facility.

*2  Agreement signed among the four parties of Fukushima Prefecture, Futaba Town, Okuma Town and TEPCO on January 2015 in order to secure the safety of the residents of the surrounding region and to restore the living environment through reduction of the site boundary dose by safely and steadily working toward the containment of the accident and decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
