Tokyo Electric Power Company
President Naomi Hirose

We deeply apologize to the people of Fukushima and broader society for the tremendous inconvenience and anxiety caused by the accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

Today, the "Japan Nuclear Safety Institute" was established through the collective efforts of the nuclear industry for the purpose of further enhancing safety measure implementation at nuclear power stations based on the lessons learned from the accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

The association will exercise strong leadership via the independent collection and analysis of the most recent findings related to domestic and overseas nuclear safety enhancement and from a technical perspective evaluate safety enhancement measures implemented by operators while providing suggestions to encourage the operators' safety enhancement activities.

Motivated by deep remorse for the tragic events that occurred at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, we are in the midst of implementing nuclear reforms based on the opinions from both domestic and overseas experts. The evaluation results, suggestions and advice to be provided by the association will be fully incorporated into our safety enhancement measures.

At the same time, the lessons and discoveries learned from the accident will be shared with the association for the purpose of enhancing nuclear safety throughout the entire nuclear industry.

The positive results obtained through the activities of the "Japan Nuclear Safety Institute" will be fully employed to strengthen nuclear safety. We will put forth our utmost efforts to advance nuclear reforms aiming to achieve the world's highest safety and technology standards.
