Status of TEPCO's Nuclear Power Stations after the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake(Daily Report as of 3:00 PM, September 16)

Due to the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake which occurred on March 11, 2011, TEPCO's facilities including our nuclear power stations have been severely damaged. We deeply apologize for the anxiety and inconvenience caused.
With regard to the accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, on April 17, 2011, we have compiled the roadmap towards restoration from the accident and on July 19 we accomplished the Step1 target "Radiation dose is in steady decline". Then on December 16 we confirmed the accomplishment of the Step 2 target "Release of radioactive materials is under control and radiation doses are being significantly held down".
In addition, on December 21, 2011, we have compiled the "Mid-to-long-Term Roadmap toward the Decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Units 1-4, TEPCO".
In addition to the maintenance of the plant's stable condition, we will implement Mid-to-Long Term countermeasures towards the decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Units 1-4 to enable evacuees to return to their homes as soon as possible and reduce the anxiety of the people in Fukushima and the whole nation as soon as possible.

Below is the status of TEPCO's nuclear power stations (Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini).

[Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station]
・Unit 1 to 4: Abolishment (April 19, 2012)
・Unit 5 to 6: Outage due to regular inspections before the earthquake

-After the flow rates of reactor injection water recovered to the state which fulfills the "operational requirement" stipulated by the technical specification for the nuclear reactor facility on September 13, the water injection amounts were continuously monitored. However, as the flow rates decreased again, the injection water amounts have been adjusted as below. The necessary injection water amounts are being secured for each unit.

At 3:29 PM on September 15
[Unit 2] Feed water system: Increased from 1.8m3/h to 2.0m3/h, Reactor core spray system: Decreased from 5.1m3/h to 5.0m3/h (In total, increased from 6.9m3/h to 7.0m3/h)
[Unit 3] Feed water system: Increased from 2.1m3/h to 2.5m3/h, Reactor core spray system: Decreased from 4.6m3/h to 4.5m3/h (In total, increased from 6.7m3/h to 7.0m3/h)

At 2:32 PM on September 16
[Unit 1] Feed water system: Increased from 2.7m3/h to 3.0m3/h, Reactor core spray
system: Increased from 1.9m3/h to 2.0m3/h (In total, increased from 4.6m3/h to 5.0m3/h)

-At around 9:42 AM on September 15, a TEPCO employee on patrol found a water leakage from the screw on the outlet side of the high-pressure pump of Skid 3 of the desalination system (reverse osmosis membrane) 3, and stopped Skid 3 of the system manually. At 11:15 AM, the leakage was stopped. The leakage was 7m x 7m x 5mm (in the deepest area) and the leaked water was confirmed to be untreated water (before being treated by the desalination system). The surface dose rates were 0.07mSv/h (γ-ray) and 1.33mSv/h (β-ray). The leaked water remains inside the dam and has not flowed outside of the system. The nuclide analysis results of the leaked water were as follows. Iodine 131: Below the detection limit (2.0×10-1Bq/cm3), Cesium 134: 1.0×100Bq/cm3, Cesium 137: 2.1×100Bq/cm3, All-β: 2.7×104Bq/cm3. Since water dropping (one drop every 10 seconds) from the leakage area was found upon site investigation, a vinyl protection cover was put on the leakage area to prevent further leakage. As Skid 3 and Skid 4 are connected through pipe and water may flow into Skid 3 while Skid 4 is in operation (even though the leakage area is isolated by valve), Skid 4 was stopped at 4:00 PM on the same day. Skid 4 and Skid 5 of the desalination system (reverse osmosis membrane) 2 were started at 8:40 AM and 8:45 AM respectively on September 16. The desalination system (reverse osmosis membrane) will intermittently operate while taking into consideration the water balance.
