Start of Compensation Payouts for the Voluntary Evacuees from Southern Fukushima Prefecture

We deeply apologize to the people who live near the nuclear power stations and the general public for the anxiety and inconvenience caused by the nuclear accident at our Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Station (hereinafter referred to as "our nuclear accident").

We are currently in the process of providing swift and fair compensation payouts to those afflicted by the nuclear accident in accordance with the Act on Compensation for Nuclear Damages including the Nuclear Damage Liability Facilitation Fund Law. We would like to announce that the compensation payouts for the voluntary evacuees from Southern Fukushima prefecture who are out of the scope specified by "Supplement of the Interim Guidelines on Criteria for Determining Nuclear Damage Indemnification Coverage (Losses due to Voluntary Evacuation)

1. Those Entitled to Receive Compensation
Those who were 18 years old or younger*1 or were pregnant*2, and had the permanent residence in Southern Fukushima prefecture (Shirakawa city, Nishigo village, Izumisaki village, Nakajima village, Yabuki town, Tanakura town, Yamatsuri town, Hanawa town and Samegawa village) at the time of the accident (March 11, 2011).

2. Compensation Overview
(1) Damages subject to compensation
A certain extent of the following damages will be covered by the compensation (fixed amount).
a. Voluntary evacuation*3
- Increase of living expenses due to voluntary evacuation
- Emotional distress caused by normal daily life being disturbed due to voluntary evacuation
- Transportation fee incurred at the time of evacuation or going home

b. Those who remained in Southern Fukushima prefecture
- Emotional distress caused by the fear or anxiety for radiation exposure and restricted freedom of action which lead to normal daily life being disturbed
- Increase of living expenses caused by the fear or anxiety for radiation exposure and restricted freedom of action

(2) Compensation Amount
The following is the compensation (across-the-board) which will be paid for the damages incurred during the specified period.


3. Application Form for Compensation
We have started sending out and accepting the application forms for compensation on June 11, 2012.

4. How to Apply
- For those who were 18 years old or younger and registered as citizens in Southern Fukushima prefecture as at March 11, 2011, applications with their names and addresses (at that time) printed on them will be sent. In order to apply, fill in the name and the bank account information, place a seal, and send it back to us.
- For those who were 18 years old or younger but were not registered as citizens of Southern Fukushima prefecture or were pregnant*4 as at March 11, 2011, application forms will be sent upon request. The request can be made by contacting the "Fukushima Nuclear Compensation Office (Voluntary evacuation helpline)".

*1 Those who were 18 years or younger: Those who were born during the period of March 12, 1992 to December 31, 2011
*2 Those who were pregnant: Those who were pregnant during the period of March 11, 2011 to December 31, 2011
*3 Voluntary evacuation: Evacuation not instructed by the government
*4 In the case that there is someone who was 18 years old or younger but not registered as a citizen as at March 11, 2011 in the same household, please be sure to add the person to the application form.
